Banner’s investment in Tucson’s healthcare future has created a new paradigm in academic medicine.
The land that Banner purchased to operate the existing hospital and then redevelop a new facility was all zoned residential, as it was developed by the University of Arizona under its exemption from local land use requirements.
Lazarus, Silvyn & Bangs, along with Banner, the architects, engineers and planners, created the Planned Area Development entitlement document to permit the growth of the Banner hospital prior to Banner owning the land. The process was a 12-month endeavor of ongoing neighborhood, staff and elected official engagement.
The Banner University Medical Center Tucson PAD was adopted in fall 2016 and the new hospital is set to open in early 2019!
